A new national rail timetable starts on Sunday 13 December 2026. If you are travelling after that date, check your train times with LNER or National Rail before you book. LNER advises booking Advance tickets at least four weeks ahead for potential savings.
The station offers step-free access to all platforms. A lift connects the forecourt with platforms 1 and 2. National Rail lists staff assistance from 06:00 to 22:45 Monday to Saturday and from 09:00 to 22:45 on Sunday. Facilities include a sheltered waiting area, toilets and refreshments.
There is a taxi rank outside the station. Advance booking is not normally necessary. Station information does not identify any accessible taxis. Guests who need a wheelchair-accessible vehicle should book one before travelling.
The walk from the station takes around 21 minutes via the Old Bridge. Allow extra time with luggage. Follow Castlegate and Marygate towards the town centre. Cross the River Tweed using the Old Bridge and continue towards Dock Road beside the river.
Parts of the old town have cobbled streets and steep sections. These can be awkward with wheeled luggage. A taxi may be more comfortable with heavy bags or during poor weather.
A taxi from the station rank is the quickest way to reach Dock Road with luggage. Rail operators recommend booking ahead for early morning or late evening journeys. Fewer taxis may be available at those times.
The Borders Buses B1 town service links Castlegate, Golden Square and Tweedmouth. It runs roughly every 30 minutes during the day and hourly in the evening. Check the latest times on the Borders Buses website before you travel.
The Old Bridge dates from the early 17th century and connects Tweedmouth with the town centre. Walking from Dock Road across the bridge takes about ten minutes. You can see the Royal Border Bridge carrying trains high above the River Tweed.
The Elizabethan ramparts surround the old town on the north bank. You can walk around them in under an hour. Our Berwick town centre map guide covers the main streets, the walls and the riverside paths in more detail.
The riverside path through Tweedmouth continues towards Spittal and its long sandy beach. The Old Bridge also gives you an easy route back to Dock Road after dinner in town. The walk takes about ten minutes.

Edinburgh is an easy day trip by train from Berwick. Direct services run through the day and the journey takes under an hour. You can leave after breakfast and spend several hours in the city.
Newcastle is also less than an hour away on many services. Both cities have centrally located stations within walking distance of shops, galleries and museums.
The 477 bus to Holy Island is run by Glen Valley Tours. It operates on Wednesdays and Saturdays, and Monday to Saturday during Northumberland school holidays. It does not run on Sundays or public holidays.
The Holy Island causeway floods twice a day at high tide. The number of return journeys varies by date because timings follow safe causeway crossing times. Check the current timetable with the operator and check the official Holy Island safe crossing times from Northumberland County Council.
A taxi is an alternative on days without a bus. Travel guides suggest fares of around £30 to £40 each way. Ask the taxi company for a current quote before booking. Our blog on visiting Holy Island and Bamburgh in winter has more on planning the visit itself.
The Arriva X18 follows the coast south from Berwick station to Bamburgh and Seahouses before continuing towards Newcastle. The weekday timetable checked showed departures from Berwick roughly every two hours from mid-morning. Check the final return service before setting off.
The Arriva X15 follows an inland route to Alnwick. The town is home to Alnwick Castle and The Alnwick Garden. The bus journey takes about an hour.
Borders Buses service 235 crosses the border to Eyemouth, Coldingham and St Abbs. Buses leave from Chapel Street in the town centre, and St Abbs is about 35 minutes away. The coastal paths at St Abb's Head offer excellent cliff walks with views across the North Sea.
Service 67 heads inland along the Tweed to Coldstream and Kelso before continuing to Galashiels. It leaves from the station entrance and runs through most of the day.
The North East Combined Authority has confirmed a £2.50 cap on adult single bus fares until March 2027. An adult Day Rover costs £6 and gives unlimited bus travel in Northumberland or County Durham for a day.
A regionwide adult day ticket covering buses, the Tyne and Wear Metro and the Shields Ferry costs £7.50. Different fares may apply to cross-border bus services including routes 235 and 67. Ask the driver or check with Borders Buses before you travel.
Some rural buses operate less frequently in winter. The 477 to Holy Island also has fewer operating days outside school holidays. In December and January, plan day trips around the shorter daylight hours. Check the last return bus before leaving Berwick.
Our guide to what winter is like in Berwick-upon-Tweed covers what the town offers during the quieter months.
Public transport does not reach every part of Northumberland. Hadrian's Wall is around 80 miles away by road and may be easier to visit during a separate stay further south. Many remote valleys in the Cheviot Hills have little or no bus service.
Sunday bus services are more limited. Some routes have fewer departures and others do not operate. Check the timetable before planning a Sunday outing.
A taxi or organised tour may be a better option than hiring a car for a single day trip.
